With the holiday seasons right around the corner, many people are starting to watch classic holiday films to get into spirit. However, Ponte Vedra High School (PVHS) students have many disagreements on what a \u2018holiday movie\u2019 truly is.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Christmas and Halloween movies have become cultural phenomenons.\u00a0 From the beloved classics like \u201cIt\u2019s a Wonderful Life\u201d and the modern hits like \u201cGoosebumps,\u201d holiday movies have become a beloved tradition for many people. However, for years the public has argued about what makes a holiday movie a legitimate \u2018holiday movie.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In 1988, the classic action movie, \u201cDie Hard\u201d was released – and sparked\u00a0a never-ending debate: is \u201cDie Hard\u201d really a Christmas movie. Bruce Willis – the movies lead actor, stated in 2018 that \u201cDie Hard<\/em> is not a Christmas movie.\u201d However, the films writer, Steven E. de Souza firmly disagreed with Willis. In fact, he made a humorous chart comparing \u201cWhite Christmas\u201d to \u201cDie Hard\u201d and \u201cDie Hard\u201d seemed to beat \u201cWhite Christmas\u201d in many aspects like the amount of Christmas songs, and the movie taking place fully in Christmas.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIn this case, it\u2019s\u00a0 a Christmas movie. He\u2019s got to get home for Christmas and his kids,\u201d stated Ryan Baidas, a PVHS junior.\u00a0\u201cWell when did \u201cDie Hard\u201d come out?\u201d asked Cooper Pratt, a PVHS junior\u00a0\u201cDie Hard\u201d came out on July 22, 1988. Almost 5 months before Christmas. This was during the summer season, instead of the holiday season.\u00a0\u201cit\u2019s just not a Christmas movie,\u201d stated Tyler Belmudez, a PVHS junior.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIn this case, it\u2019s\u00a0 a Christmas movie. He\u2019s got to get home for Christmas and his kids.\u201d<\/p>Ryan Baidas (11)<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n Many students do not think a film being set at Christmas makes it a holiday film. \u201cIron Man 3\u201d was set during Christmas but came out during May. Few people bring up \u201cIron Man 3\u201d as a Christmas movie, yet at the same time, \u201cDie Hard\u201d is still considered a Christmas classic by many. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201c[Iron Man 3] and \u201cDie Hard\u201d are Christmas movies because they both have one Christmas song in it and they are both set during Christmas, \u201cstated Ryan Baidas <\/p>\n\n\n\n Another debate regarding a film’s festivity has been, \u201cThe Nightmare Before Christmas.\u201d The film takes place during Christmas, but the film is also very creepy and overtly references Halloween. The main character, Jack Skeleton, is the leader of Halloween.\u00a0\u201cI’m going to put Christmas because it deals more with Christmas than Halloween,\u201d Stated Pratt.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe Nightmare before Christmas\u201d was initially released just 2 days before Halloween, giving it little time to thrive over the Halloween season. However, it did have time to succeed during the Christmas season. The debate still continues because of the tone of the film. The film is accurately described as a \u2018nightmare.\u2019It has inherently creepy and unsettling imagery that is usually correlated with Halloween. <\/p>\n\n\n\n This brings up the hard definition of Halloween movies. Most Halloween classics like \u201cFriday the 13th<\/sup>” and \u201ca Nightmare of Elm Street\u201d do not focus or even reference Halloween. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI think just horror movies in general are Halloween movies…. I would say [the movie Alien] is a Halloween movie. I would say the entire horror genre is Halloween,\u201d stated Rocco Ross, a PVHS junior. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Classifying movies will always be a town of discussion.
