On Aug. 21, The Ponte Vedra High School (PVHS) Sharks faced off against the University Christan High School (UCHS) Fighting Christans for the first game of the regular season. After a rough 40-7 loss to Saint Augustine High School in their preseason game, PVHS looks to bounce back and start the regular season off with a win. After a first quarter that showed both teams’ score<\/a> a touchdown, the Sharks would get the edge in the second quarter, leading 19-14 going into the half. After a strong second quarter, the momentum all seemed to be with PVHS as the defense and the offense were both in sync. However, UCHS proved that a half can change everything as their defense completely shut down PVHS’ offense outscoring them 8-0 in the third quarter and giving them a 19-22 lead going into the fourth. With 40 seconds left in the game, PVHS had a 29-28 lead. After the Fighting Christan’s had a huge 4th<\/sup> down conversersion, they connected on a deep ball that put them from the 50-yard line to the 1. Despite the Sharks holding their own on the goal line, the end was inevitable as UCHS hit the game winning field goal with the clock winding down to zero. PVHS lost in heartbreak fashion 29-31. Junior quarterback, Carter Sole looked great with 220 passing yards and 3 passing touchdowns on a 66% completion percentage. Senior linebacker, Carter Ottesen led the team with both 12 total tackles and 3 tackles for loss. Senior edge rusher, Caden Kartzmark came through with a huge sack to stop UCHS drive<\/a> and give PVHS the ball back. After the game, Kartzmark stated “It felt great because I was able to have that sack in front of all my friends and my school”.
