On Aug. 28, the Ponte Vedra High School (PVHS) Sharks traveled to Bishop Kenny High School (BKHS) to take on the Crusaders. After a tough loss last week, the Sharks looked to fix their mistakes and pick up their first win of the season. BKHS came out the gates hot, scoring a touchdown in the first while holding PVHS scoreless. In the second, The Sharks continued the defensive struggles by allowing two more unanswered touchdowns, and with a late field goal for the Sharks, they trailed 3-21 going into the half. After a troublesome first half with the offense and defense both struggling, PVHS looked for a big third quarter if they wanted any chance to be in this game. After outscoring BKHS 7-0 in the third quarter, the Sharks were on the goal line on fourth down in their last drive of the fourth quarter. Down 18-21, with a chance to win the game, PVHS decided to play it safely and send the game to overtime with a field goal.

“being injured made me realize you only get one high school career and when you’re out on the field, you have to make the most of it”
Robert Gilvarry (12)

However, this turned into a costly mistake as all the momentum the Sharks built in the second half vanished in overtime as the Crusaders scored a touchdown on the first play of overtime. With the game on the line, PVHS’ offense was shut down, and the Sharks took another rough loss in the overtime thriller 21-28. Junior quarterback, Carter Sole put up another great game throwing for 419 yards with 2 passing touchdowns and a 66% completion rate on 50 passes. Junior wide receiver, Cade Turner was Sole’s best option as he caught both touchdowns to pairing with his 158 receiving yards.

Despite the loss, there were many positives to take out of the game. The defense showed a lot of improvement after week 1, and the offense was more in sync after the first half. After the game, senior outside linebacker, Robert Gilvarry, who missed week one because of an injury, stated, “being injured made me realize you only get one high school career and when you’re out on the field, you have to make the most of it”.
