The reasoning for why Thursdays are the worst
day of the week have to do with the physical, mental, and academic stresses that Thursday
uniquely imposes which make Mondays seem like a cakewalk in comparison once one
understands the case for why Thursday is worse than Monday.
At PVHS students engage in a number of academic, athletic, and extracurricular activities
that peak right as the week begins to wind down, creating a perfect storm of exhaustion. By the
time Thursday morning rolls around, the initial adrenaline of Monday is long gone, and the
heavy physical toll of the week has fully set in. Students waking up for zero period or early
morning sports practices find themselves battling an accumulated sleep deficit that makes rolling
out of bed an uphill battle. Thursday represents the absolute lowest point of student energy,
where the physical demands of the week collide with a body that is running entirely on empty.
Unlike Monday, where students are coming off a two-day weekend reset, Thursday doesn’t offer
the same buffer.

Tillman Fried, a high school junior at Ponte Vedra High School (PVHS) states, “yeah its hard to
get sleep and it makes Thursday.”

“most of my classes have tests on Thursday or Friday, meaning I either have to
take a test or study for one.”
Tillman Fried (11)

Mentally, Thursday operates as a cruel psychological tease that drains focus and increases
anxiety. It sits awkwardly as the “gatekeeper” to the weekend—close enough to visualize Friday
afternoon, yet far enough away that students must still endure a full slate of core classes. This mid-week burnout manifests in classrooms across PVHS as a collective drop in engagement.
Teachers notice the glazed expressions and the heavy reliance on caffeine just to make it through
the block schedule. The mental stamina required to maintain high performance is stretched to its
absolute limit, turning Thursday into an emotional slog where motivation goes to die.

Academically, Thursday is often the true “judgement day” of the week at PVHS. Because
teachers want to avoid assigning major assessments on Fridays—or because they are racing to
finish a unit before the weekend—Thursday becomes the ultimate dumping ground for heavy
workloads. It is not uncommon for a student to face multiple unit exams, lab reports, and
presentations all crammed into this single day. The night before, Wednesday, is subsequently
transformed into an agonizing, late-night study session, compounding the physical exhaustion
the next morning. While Mondays typically consist of introducing new material and easing back
into the curriculum, Thursdays demand immediate, high-stakes output.

Tillman states, “most of my classes have tests on Thursday or Friday, meaning I either have to
take a test or study for one.”

Ultimately, the traditional hatred of Monday is merely a knee-jerk reaction to the end of the
weekend. Monday is a fresh start, filled with a clean slate and restored energy. Thursday, by
contrast, is a relentless gauntlet of physical depletion, psychological torture, and academic
overload. For the students navigating the halls of Ponte Vedra High School, Thursday is not the
hopeful eve of the weekend—it is the heaviest, most exhausting hurdle of the entire week.

Graphic made by: Aden Seelbinder

By: Gabriel Nochera Although it’s common knowledge that the widely held belief is Mondays are the worstdays of the week; one could argue for Ponte Vedra High School (PVHS) students Thursdayedges out Monday as the worst day of the week….

[2
944,257,138,139,149
