The Ponte Vedra High School girls volleyball team swept Chiles High School in the first round of regionals last Wednesday, Oct, 26. The Sharks dominated with scores of 25-9, 25-16, and 25-12 to win the regional quarterfinals in the FSHAA Girls Volleyball State tournament. With a total of 42 kills and 14 serving aces, the girls had a clean sweep to victory. Senior middle, Zeta Washington contributed 17 kills and three blocks for the team. “I love playing with this team and for Ponte Vedra, and the goal is to make it all the way to states again,” described Zeta. Zeta will be heading off to the University of Cincinnati next fall to pursue her volleyball career. “We must stay consistent and take care of business,” said assistant coach Raab.
Last Saturday, Oct. 29, the girl’s season came to a close in a nail-biting match against New Symrna Beach High School. The match was lost in five sets at scores of 24-26, 26-24, 20-25, 25-20, and 13-15. Both teams were evenly matched, yet the Sharks came up short in the fifth set. “It was a fight till the end, and I am so proud of this team,” stated senior defensive specialist, Priya Rajhansa. The Sharks will be losing four crucial seniors; however, they will be as strong as ever next fall, with multiple dominating underclassmen.
