The Ponte Vedra High School girls’ golf team has had a strong season thus far, with wins over Fleming Island, Nease, Buchholz, and Fernandina already.
Last year, the Lady Sharks finished as State Runner-Ups, losing to American Heritage by only seven strokes. This year, they are hungry to finally secure the state title. Coach Adrienne Siewert remarks, “We were so close last year, so we are hoping we can go all the way. All five of the girls who competed at States returned this season, so we’re in a good place.”
Some notable seniors this year include team captains, Tory Barned, Nancy Cox, and Alexandra Drum. Coach Siewert states, “Nancy Cox has had a great first half of the season. She is averaging 36 for nine holes, has been an individual medalist in six of the seven matches she’s played in, including being the individual girls champion at the Jax Beach varsity invitational with a two below par (69).” Cox is verbally committed to play golf at Florida Atlantic University in the fall. Tory Barned has also had an impressive season so far, stating that, “As a senior, I want to end my high school career by getting as many wins as possible with my team.” She plans to continue improving throughout the season, “And shoot lower by playing the course, not letting the course play me.”
According to Coach Siewert, “American Heritage is still on our radar and Beachside has come out with a very competitive team this season. Beachside we will meet at Regionals and American Heritage we will meet once again at States.” She believes the Lady Sharks will have to beat both teams in order to prevail at States.
The Districts tournament will take place Monday, Oct. 23rd at Fernandina Beach Golf Club.
