Future DECA Benefits for Students at PVHS

By Aden Seelbinder

Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) has prepared many students of high schools and colleges across the United States with better opportunities in life and college and helped develop skills that benefit the students with extraordinary lifelong skills.

DECA is a career club that gives students opportunities to become emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management. At Ponte Vedra High School, DECA and the career academies in Business and Marketing work with each other. It creates a domain many students can go to, to advance their learning and further their knowledge

Ms. Lankford Marketing Teacher at PVHS said, “It prepares you for public speaking and leadership which plays a role into college.” Public speaking is the key to a lot of life skills, without it college presentations would end up harder for students. DECA can really play a role in helping the mind develop the mental drive to conjure up the emotion and fearlessness to present in front of a class, a person or even hundreds of thousands of people. It all depends on if your mind can focus on what’s important and needed for that.

Extracurriculars seem like a roadblock but as Ms. Lankford said, “We always find a way to balance anything with DECA you name it I have dealt with a student that’s been in it.” Additionally, students don’t even need to be in a academy class to enter DECA its as simple as signing up when its club fair at school.

“It prepares you for public speaking and leadership which plays a role into college.”

At a “town hall meeting” held at PVHS for the academy’s on Aug 16 there was a short speech given on some info for DECA “Our chapter also does a lot of Community service with organizations like ToysForTots, The Green Team, making cards for the elderly and many more…” The community service side of DECA shows the character building that DECA can provide to showcase maturity in a student even at the age of 14 and up.

DECA also provides many opportunities to earn awards and scholarships through competitions, International Career Development Conference (ICDC) is a competition that brings high school students apart of DECA to compete in their chosen category. This shows their skills and knowledge to possibly be named an international champion.
