The Ponte Vedra High School girls wrestling team has had a successful few weeks as their season continues on. At a recent tournament at McKeel High School, the team placed second overall, with individual wins by juniors, Olivia Richie and Erin Rizzuto, as well as a second place finish by senior, Cynthia Kowitski. Richie says, “The McKeel tournament went just as the team wanted. With only six girls wrestling for us, we managed to place second as a team, and the team that beat us had over ten girls. So, that tournament couldn’t have gone better for us as a team.” Additionally, the girls were victorious in their duel against Matanzas High School.
With regionals and states rapidly approaching, the team is training harder than ever, with hopes to continue their winning streak. Richie states, “I’m personally preparing for regionals just by putting the work I need into practice. Competing becomes easy when everyone has the same mindset in the wrestling room, and we are able to have fun. This is the first year wrestling is sanctioned for girls, and with some seniors leaving this year, we are just trying to make the most of the season. We all work super hard and compete well together, so we have high expectations not only for regionals, but districts and states!”
The team has upcoming matches against Middleburg on Thursday, January 27, and Flagler on January 28.
