On Sep. 27 the Fleming Island High School Golden Eagles hosted the Ponte Vedra High School Sharks. The Sharks defense was struggling through the first quarter, they went down two scores early in the game making the score 14-0. The Sharks tried to get on the right track when senior running back, Brian Case punched in the end zone getting the Sharks their first touchdown of the game making the score 14-6 after the PAT was missed. The half was coming to an end when the Golden Eagles responded with a touchdown of their own making the score going into half 21-6.
The Sharks needed to respond big in the second half and they did. The Sharks offense got hot when they needed, senior quarterback, Drew Price went 15/27 with 294 passing yards and a touchdown. The Sharks scored early in the second half making the score 21-12 after a failed two-point conversation. The defense for the Sharks played well keeping the Golden Eagles to 21 points for the third quarter. The Sharks wide receivers came up big in the second half, junior wide receiver, Davitt Doherty had a stellar game raking in 7 catches for 107 yards and a touchdown. Junior wide receiver, Jack Berquist added to the Sharks success with 4 catches and 94 yards. The Sharks went up late in the fourth quarter when a Price pass found the hands of Doherty, making the score 29-28. The Sharks defense failed to prevent the Golden Eagles from getting into field goal range late, and the Golden Eagles made the game winning field goal, propelling them to victory. Defensive Tackle, Martin Geary said, “This is just a minor setback we will get back on track next week.”
