The Ponte Vedra High School girls soccer team has begun another season, and are looking to continue their dominance from the previous season. The Sharks are coming off a fantastic season with a 22-1-1 record and a State Championship win. While the Sharks lost some key seniors, they also are returning a deep roster of talent and look to defend their State championship. The Sharks senior class is highlighted by seniors Jenny Dearie committed to the University of North Carolina, Abby Wooten committed to Samford University, and Natalie McCann committed to the University of North Florida. These seniors and the rest of the team will look to fill huge shoes and continue their dominance.
The Sharks opened up their season on the road at Stanton College Prep on Nov. 6. The Sharks and the Blue Devils played a close first half but that all changed when sophomore forward, Katie Devincentis, scored the Sharks first goal of the season on the assist from senior forward Jenny Dearie, making the score 1-0 in favor of the Sharks. The first half came to close with the score staying at 1-0. The Sharks came out hot in the second half and added to their total with a score by junior forward Lily Morse making the score 2-0. The Blue Devils added a goal late in the second half bring the score to 2-1. That was it for the scoring in this game with a final score of 2-1 and making the Sharks record 1-0 on the season. Dearie said on the upcoming season, “We lost some crucial seniors but we are going to step up and look to defend our state title. It was a good way to start the season with a win.”
The Sharks will next play undefeated Niceville at a neutral sight on Nov. 14 and look to continue the season with a win.
