After a strong 4-2 start, the Ponte Vedra Sharks girls basketball team fell into a slump losing three straight games to Fletcher, Beachside, and Creekside. Despite proficient defensive play in each of their three losses, the Sharks have struggled to put points on the board averaging just 42 points in that span. Senior shooting guard, Lily Schroeder, disappointed by the losing streak, stays optimistic as she knows, “We’re better than almost every team we’ve played, we just need to eliminate our mental mistakes and come together as a team in order to succeed.” Fueled by their string of losses, the Sharks went on to beat Riverside and Sandalwood soundly in 50-30, and 57-22 point victories. Not only have these wins strengthened the Sharks’ playoff case, but have also helped steer the season back on course.
The Sharks have relied heavily on their core of older players to carry the load of the team as junior small forward, Arden Doherty leads the team with 14.7 points per game, and senior point guard, Haley Hughes consistently comes down with the ball as she collects 5.2 assists per game. Despite a current 6-5 record and a start that was not ideal, the team has started to come together and looks to completely turn the season around. No one should count the Sharks out, as they truly look like a new team after the rebirth of their confidence and swagger on the hardwood.
