The Ponte Vedra High School Sharks took on the South Dade High School Buccaneers. The Sharks basketball team looks to get back on track after losing to Impact Christian that snapped their 6-game win streak. The Buccaneers took the lead early as they went up 19-14 by the end of the first quarter. Most of the second quarter was back and forth as the Sharks were outscored 11-12 in the second. The score at halftime was 31-25 Buccaneers. There wasn’t much action in the third quarter, it was a low scoring quarter. The Sharks look to mount a big fourth quarter comeback as they were down by 7 points to start the fourth. The Sharks did exactly what they needed as they had a huge fourth quarter. The Sharks had a 15-1 run the entire fourth quarter as they went on to beat the Buccaneers 47-40 in an instant classic. Senior small forward, Paul Burkhardt had 10 points in the Sharks win.
Lake Highland Prep Highlanders took on the Sharks in a highly anticipated matchup. Coming off a win the Sharks are looking to put together another quality win. The game started with both teams in an offensive showdown with a high scoring first quarter. The Highlanders led the Sharks by a score of 17-9 at the end of the first quarter. The game continued and it was more of the same action as each team traded blows going shot for shot. At halftime the Highlanders still led by a score of 32-24. The Sharks could never seem to start their comeback as in the third and fourth quarter they put up 28 points compared to the Highlanders 26. This was not enough to mount the Sharks to a comeback win and they would fall to the Highlanders 58-52. Senior guard, David Sanchez Barrera had 16 points in the Sharks loss.
The next matchup for the Sharks was against the Fleming Island High School Golden Eagles. The Sharks look to get back in the win column after a tough loss to Lake Highland Prep. The game started off tight with neither team pulling ahead by the end of the first quarter. The score was 12-11 at the end of the first quarter with the Sharks barely leading the Golden Eagles. Following the tight first quarter, the second was more of the same as each team had a huge offensive showing. Both teams knocked down 17 points each, and the score was 29-28 favoring the Sharks at halftime. After halftime, the third quarter was slower than the second. The Sharks scored 13 beating out the Golden Eagles by one as they score 12 points. Out of nowhere the Sharks exploded in the fourth quarter as they scored 24 points and pulled away from the Golden Eagles. The final score was 66-59 favoring the Sharks. Junior power forward, Trace Westercamp scored 17 points in the Sharks win. Junior small forward, Max Mracek spoke on how the Sharks have been playing, “we are starting to play more together, and we have good chemistry that will help us for a tough stretch of games.”
