Many seniors are going to college and choosing to live on campus with a roommate. When looking for a college roommate, a good time to start is a few months prior to the upcoming term. Many qualities go into finding the perfect roommate. Some students choose to room with somebody that they know, while some choose to go the other way and go with a random person.
According to The Breeze, a website to find a roommate compatible to students. the greatest benefit of having a roommate is doing life together side by side, this is especially helpful when trying to adjust to the “college life.” In the morning the first person to encounter is your roommate and the first after a long day of classes.
“I am going to the University of North Florida, and I am looking to make more friends besides the existing ones I am going with. Since I am going with a random roommate, I hope to find a new person to have a large impact on my life on my own.”
Madeline Boychuck (12)
Deciding to choose a random roommate for college can also be a good idea. It breaks through student’s comfort zone and allows to develop crucial life skills. In the future not everyone is going to be someone familiar so getting used to making these connections early on can be helpful. College freshman, Natalie Simmons at Florida State University, she said, “Deciding to go with a random roommate was one of the best decisions I have ever made. I have not only a great person to live with but someone I know will be my biggest supporter.” Going with a random roommate will teach how to adapt to someone who might be very different, which can be valuable to any stage of life. There are many apps and websites as well as social media available to help find the perfect roommate to align with which is very important. It also teaches the buildup of communication skills and getting used to getting comfortable with change and new people which is a part of life regardless.
This time of the year all seniors are going through this process themselves. Senior at Ponte Vedra High School, Madeline Boychuck is choosing to room with someone random. “I am going to the University of North Florida, and I am looking to make more friends besides the existing ones I am going with. Since I am going with a random roommate, I hope to find a new person to have a large impact on my life on my own.” Meeting new people can be very beneficial and doing this can be an asset to a glimpse of the future. While some choose to stick within their personal boundaries of people they already know, it may be beneficial to branch out.
