Sharks Girls Swimming Dominates Districts and Regionals, While the Boys Perform Strong

On Oct. 29, the Ponte Vedra High School (PVHS) Sharks swim team competed in the Class 3A District Championships. Both the girls’ and boys’ teams were champions. The girls’ team was led by first place finishes by senior, Sophie Fox in the 100m Fly, senior, Kate Pelot in the 100m Backstroke, and sophomore, Juju Cavalcanti in the 200 Individual Medley, as well as multiple first places in relays. The boys’ team also were champions with first place finishes from junior, Thomas Smith in the 200m Freestyle, junior, Aaron Yang in the 100m Backstroke, and junior, Danny Reyes in the 50m Freestyle DIS and 100m Freestyle DIS. The boys also finished first in the 200m Freestyle relay. After districts, Yang stated, “I am proud of the win, we are going to move with confidence now for the rest of the postseason”. The Sharks look to continue their win streak at regionals on Nov. 5 in regionals.

On Nov. 5, the Ponte Vedra High School (PVHS) Sharks swim team competed in the Class 3A Region 1 Championship. The girls’ team dominated with a first-place finish, and the boys’ team had a very close fourth place. The girls’ team was led by first place finishes from senior, Sophie Fox in the 50m Freestyle and 100m Butterfly, sophomore, Juju Cavalcanti in the 200m Individual Medley, senior, Kate Pelot in the 100m Freestyle, and senior, Lily Doyle in the 500m Freestyle, as well as three champions in relays. Senior, Kate Pelot stated after the win, “winning regionals were a great steppingstone to prepare for states the next week. It showed the work we had put in throughout the season and really reassured us that a five peat was possible.” While the boys’ team did not have any first place finishes, there were many podium finishes such as junior, Danny Reyes getting second in both the 50m Freestyle DIS and 100m Freestyle DIS, junior, Thomas Smith getting third in both the 200m Freestyle and 100m Butterfly, and junior, Chase Kendall getting third in the 400m Freestyle. The boys finished second in the 200m Freestyle relay and third place in the 200m Freestyle relay. The boys’ and girls’ travel to Ocala for states on Nov. 15 as the girls look to continue their five-year win streak.
