Ponte Vedra High School had their first official swim meet this Sep 16 at home, hosting St. Augustine High School and Fernandina Beach High School. The meet went quite swimmingly for PVHS, as both boys and girls won by large margins. Some outstanding performances came from the freshmen, especially from freshman Mary Agnes Smith, who was the only girl who finished under two minutes in her 200 yard freestyle. PVHS also had freshmen Penny Zarczynski and Windsor Lockhart, who came in first and second for the girls 50 yard freestyle. In the girls 500 freestyle, PVHS had a top four sweep led by senior, Holly Cox followed by junior, Brooke Batelli, sophomore, Sydney Straub and junior, Kailee Bull.
On the boys side to start junior, Dominic Ambrosio absolutely dominated the 100 yard freestyle with about an eight second win. He was not the only one that did well in this race though, sophomore, Jason Li and senior, Mahad Niazi wrapped up the top three in this race. The boys also won the 200 yard medley relay by almost 12 whole seconds with outstanding performances from sophomores John Burke, Ryan Yang, Jason Li along with junior, Fabrizzio Lijeron Herrera. Yang stated that PVHS had, “a lot of good swims.” Yang also led a PVHS sweep in the 100 yard backstroke with junior, Andrew Liu, freshman, Sawyer Tartt and junior, Zachary Russell rounding out the top four for this race.
Overall PVHS had a great season opener, beating St. Augustine High School by 295 points and beating Fernandina Beach High School by 269 points. Even though not all athletes were featured, all athletes swam phenomenally. The Bartram Trail High School meet was cancelled due to weather conditions, so the next meet will be at Fleming Island High School on September 30.
