Benefits of Beach Living

By Emma Woods

Living by the beach is healthier than living inland, for the beach provides both physical and mental health benefits. Listening to the waves crash and feeling the light breeze is peaceful. All of the negative ions put one’s mind at ease.

The beach produces negative ions from the waves crashing and the sun’s rays. Air molecules break apart due to the sunlight and moving water which is how negative ions are created. The negative ions “reduce symptoms of depression and reduce stress,” said Healthline. Leila Festic, a student at Ponte Vedra High School (PVHS), said “the beach makes me happy and always boosts my mood.” These ions can help boost immune systems while killing harmful bacteria and diseases. Overall, the negative ions at the beach are a source of better health.

There are many fun activities people can participate in at the beach such as swimming, throwing a frisbee, and surfing. While these activities keep participants moving, they are also fun ways to exercise. Exercise is beneficial to physical strength, as well as happiness, by increasing endorphins and other positive brain chemicals.

The University of New Hampshire explains that the sand will work to exfoliate skin, the salt water will detoxify pores once the sun opens them up, and the iodine in the water will destroy any bacteria in your skin that can cause blemishes. “My favorite thing about the beach is being able to go in the waves and sit in the sun,” said Addie Culp, a PVHS student. Every part of the beach works together to create a healthy environment.

Balance of hormones, low-stress levels, and physical fatigue are the three main factors of good sleep. Going to the beach is a terrific way to get good sleep. The sun balances out hormones. The negative ions and the conditions of the beach create relaxation which lowers stress levels. Physical fatigue occurs after engaging in excursive activities.

Many people go to the beach to watch the sunrise or sunset which are amazing sites to see. The beach has a beauty of its own. Additionally, there are many astounding creatures living at the beach that are very cool to spot in their natural habitat. The beach is a home to many, a beautiful sight to most, and most importantly a health benefit to all. Just remember to wear sunscreen!
