The Ponte Vedra High School girls golf team started their season last week, with a win on Tuesday in their tri-match against Beachside and Columbia High School, at the Ponte Vedra Inn and Club. The girls won with a total score of 177 to Columbia’s 185 and Beachside’s 211. Junior, Tory Barned shot a 40 and was the team’s only medalist
Last year, the girls ended off their season at States placing thirteenth. According to Coach Adrienne Siewart, “We lost five seniors after the 2020 season, so we had a very young team, but they really stepped up.” Some standout seniors include Megan Grant and team captain Kathy Miller, who were on the post season team last year. Grant says, “I’ve been prioritizing golf and practicing a lot more this year than I did last year. I have been working on my short game more, because that’s where my score can lose a lot of strokes. My score has already improved a lot, but I’m still working to get it lower, because I want the opportunity to go to States again.” The team’s main goal is to become a contender at States once again, and they have been consistently working hard to reach that over the summer and during practices.
The girls have their next match against Fernandina Beach, who took second place at States for the 2A class last year. The match will be played this Thursday in Marsh Landing.
