Boys Tennis Moves Into Championship Series

By Oscar D’Amato

After a long and volatile season, the Ponte Vedra boy’s tennis team has another chance at a state championship. Under the guidance of team captains, senior Ofek Blank and junior Grant Price, they have practiced daily to get to this point. With the state semifinals coming up stakes are at an all-time high.

As the tournament began, Ponte Vedra faced some adequate opponents but managed to win each match without giving up too many points. After beating Fleming Island and Gainsville 4-0, the team was confident going into their next game against Gulf Breeze.

In contrast to Ponte Vedra’s expectations, the match was close, with both teams showing equal skill. Ponte Vedra fought hard and managed to win the first set, but Gulf Breeze came back to win the second. With the game tied and the season on the line, Ponte Vedra had to get it together to keep their season alive. After a quick pep-talk from Captain Blank between sets, the team played their best sets ever to win two straight sets to make the final score 4-2. After being asked how the team managed to pull themselves together, Captain Blank said “we simply wanted to win more than ever and didn’t want to lose more than ever”. The Ponte Vedra boy’s tennis team will continue their journey to the state championship in the semifinals on April 25th against Wiregrass Ranch.
