Girls Wrestling Starts Season Strong

By Nina Lueck

The Ponte Vedra High School girls wrestling team started their season off strong with a win Wednesday night in their first home match against Creekside. Junior, Olivia Richie had an amazing pin and was the outstanding wrestler of the night, leading the girls to their 21-6 victory.

Last year, the girls finished their season fifth in the unsanctioned state tournament with a few wrestlers placing in the top three. PVHS girls wrestling Coach Nadine Fiege says, “This year we are training harder than the last. The girls have huge goals for this inaugural sanctioned season and we plan to push them to achieve them. We are lucky in the sense that we have two female former collegiate, All-American wrestlers leading the team as coaches, so we certainly are focusing on teaching freestyle as well as folkstyle to open more doors for the girls and add to their tool belt.”

As their season progresses, some stand out seniors to watch for are team captain, Cynthia Kowitski, Emma Dix, and Mira Schmidt, all three of whom have been part of the team for several years and have played key roles in it’s development.

The team has tournament Dec. 3, and will continue regular season matches throughout the month.
