Sharks Girls and Boys Swim Teams get off to a Hot Start

By Foster Keebaugh

To start off the season the Sharks hosted a mock meet. The girls are coming off a state championship led by coach Barry and hope to get another this year. The meet consisted of two teams the Black team and the Blue team which were picked randomly.  During the meet, sophomore Thomas Smith broke the men’s 100m fly school record, swimming a 51.50.  The Black team won in the men’s, and for the girls the Blue and Black teams tied. The first meet took place on Sep 5 at home against Fernandina High School.

“I have high hopes for the rest of the season and can’t wait to swim with my friends.”

In the meet against the Fernandina Beach Pirates, the Sharks planned to start aggressively and win the first events, which then carried on into the ladder events. In the end, both the boys and the girls won dominantly. Many swimmers got personal bests, including men’s captain Hugh Williams who swam a personal best in the 200 freestyle. Williams said, “I have high hopes for the rest of the season and can’t wait to swim with my friends.” The girl’s team was led by senior captain Penny Zarczynski who swam the 200 freestyle and 100 fly. So far, the Sharks have been dominant and hope to carry the momentum for the rest of the season. The Sharks are preparing for their next meet on Sep. 12, where they will take on Fletcher and Cornerstone at home.
