Baseball Open the Regular Season

The Ponte Vedra High School baseball team took on the Christ Church Academy Eagles on Feb. 10 to official kick off the boy’s regular season. The Sharks started off scoring on an error and following that junior centerfielder, Luca Candella, grounded out scoring another making it 2-0. Another error occurred for the Eagles as they allowed another run for the Sharks.  In the top of the sixth inning scoring six runs on three hits. Junior first baseman, James Salvati, drew a walk and scored a run. After, senior second baseman, Grady Hartman hit an impressive triple to drive in three runs making the score 6-2. Following that, the Lickliter twins, Storm and Steele, singled and doubled scoring in a total of three runs. Following that, the Sharks added four more runs and the Eagles tallied up three more runs making the final score 13-5.

            On Feb. 18, The Sharks took on the Providence School Stallions in a thriller of a game. The Stallions started off firing on all cylinders scoring four runs by the second inning. Storm Lickliter led the team in runs batted in sending in two runs. The team was showing a strong batter’s eye tallying a total of six walks total for the Sharks.It wasn’t until the bottom of the seventh inning when the boys started moving the bats. The Sharks scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh but it wasn’t enough. Hartman stated, “We played hard against a great team. I am happy with how we preformed.” The Sharks lost close and the final score being 5-4 in favor of the Stallions. But the Sharks have a chance to redeem themselves by playing another game at home on Feb. 20.

            The Sharks took on the Fletcher High School Senators and this game started off early. The Senators began scoring two runs off of an error in the top of the first and another in the second making the score 3-0. The Sharks retaliated by scoring two in the bottom of the third. Senior Aspen McAdoo singled, scoring a run. He was followed by brother and Dylan McAdoo walked and scored another making it 3-2. Everything was quiet until the game was on the line. Dylan McAdoo singled to center field scoring junior pitcher, Maddox Tepper to tie the game. Just following that, Steele Lickliter singled to left field and scored junior pinch runner, Luke Goerge to win the game on a walk off. The Sharks showed tremendous determination despite the score and go their first home victory of the year. The boys would once again host another game on Feb. 21, taking on the Fleming Island Golden Eagles.

            The Golden Eagles started off the top of the first with one run scored until Dylan McAdoo singled to center field to score in a run, and tie it at the bottom of the first. But after that, it was all the Sharks game. Stanton hit a sacrifice flyball and scored another run in the bottom of the third to take the lead. In the bottom of the sixth is when the bats started moving. Rambler drew a walk scoring one, Stanton hit a double off of the wall, Candella scored a double off the wall, and Steele Lickliter singled. Storm Lickliter was on the mound and delivered a win only allowing one run for the night and minimal hits for the Golden Eagles. The Sharks won with an impressive score of 8-1. The boys record would be standing at a 3-2 with another week of three games.
