The Evolution of Teenage Slang

In the rapidly evolving digital era, one thing that seems to change faster and faster is language. With the introduction of technology and the internet, the way people communicate has undergone a transformation. Nowhere is this more evident than in the speech of teenagers, which often leaves adults feeling like they’re missing something to understand. But teenagers having their own language is nothing new, for example in the 1950s-1960s some commonly used words by teens were:

     1: Groovy (awesome/cool) Ex: “That beat is groovy!”

     2: Rad (great/excellent) Ex: “That party was totally rad!”

     3: Bread (money) Ex: “Where did you get all that bread?” “My new job”

     4: Goat (greatest of all time) Ex: “That guy is so good at football!” “He’s the goat.”

     5: Bookin (going fast) Ex: “That guy is bookin it down the street!”

     Here is an example of 20 commonly used words by teenagers today:

     1: BRB (be right back) Ex: “I’m going to go jump off a cliff, brb.”

     2: LOL (laugh out loud) Ex: “LOL that video is so funny!”

     3: OMG (oh my gosh) Ex: “OMG that cliff is so high.”

     4: OMW (on my way) Ex: “Sounds good I’m OMW.”

     5: Savage (crazy) Ex: “You’re a savage for jumping off that cliff!”

     6: Cap (not true) Ex: “I jumped off a cliff with no parachute.” “Yea that’s cap.”

     7: Bet (let’s do it) Ex: “Let’s go jump off a cliff with no parachute.” “Bet.”

     8: Bruh (bro what?) Ex: “I’m just going to jump off the cliff.” “Bruh.”

     9: Ick (gross you out) Ex: “The way he jumped off that cliff gave me an ick.”

     10: W (a personal win) Ex: “I got adopted yesterday!” “That’s a W.”

Rizz (skillfully charm) Ex: “He saved me from falling off the cliff.” “Yea, thats W rizz”

     11: Fire (really amazing or cool) Ex: “I jumped off that cliff while blindfolded!” “That’s fire!”

     12: Sick (cool or amazing) Ex: “No way you jumped off that cliff” “Bro that’s so sick.”

     13: Lit (hyped up) Ex: “I got so lit at that party.”

     14: Dough (money) Ex: “I got so much dough from work.”

     15: Bot (not smart/Not real) Ex: “You’re a bot for falling off that cliff.”

     16: Trippin (wrong) Ex: “Bro I swear I saw a person falling off that cliff” “You’re trippin”

     17: SMH (shaking my head) Ex: “Bro I’m about to jump off that cliff.” “SMH”

     18: Dub (W or win) Ex: “I’m going to jump off that cliff because I can.” “That’s a dub.”

     19: Hard (cool/looks good) Ex: “That chain on your neck goes hard.”     

20: Rizz (skillfully charm) Ex: “He saved me from falling off the cliff.” “Yea, that’s W rizz”
