Sharks Girls Soccer Wins Back to Back State Championships

By Aspen McAdoo

The Ponte Vedra High School girls soccer team traveled to DeLand, Florida for the State Semi-finals against North Fort Myers High School. The Sharks fell to the Red Knights earlier in the season by a score of 4-0 so they wanted revenge in this huge matchup. It was a good start for the Sharks as they scored the first goal of the game from junior forward, Lily Morse on the assist from the other junior forward, Izzy Whitaker, making the score 1-0 in favor of the Sharks. To close out the first half, the Red knights answered back and maybe the score 1-1 heading into halftime. The Sharks defense showed up in the second half not allowing anything to get going for the Red Knights. The game was a standstill until the Sharks added their second goal of the game from sophomore defender, Lulu Consunji and sophomore forward, Katie DeVincentis had the assist which was all the Sharks needed to bring home the 2-1 win. The Sharks will be heading to the State Championship game and look home to bring home some hardware.

The Sharks took on Lourdes Academy for the State Championship and looked to bring home back to back state championships. Getting off to a good start was key and the Sharks certainly did that as they scored the first goal of the game from DeVincentis on the assist from Whitaker, giving them a 1-0 lead. The rest of the half was a very defensive battle as the score was 1-0 at the half. Everything was going the Sharks way as they added their second goal of the game from Consunji giving them a commanding 2-0 lead. Sophomore goalie, Abby Kennedy played fantastic racking up 10 saves. Lourdes Academy added a goal towards the end of the game but it wasn’t enough to mount a comeback. The Sharks won the State Championship 2-1 and have won back to back state championships.

This was the Sharks 5th state championship title since the school has opened up as this historic program continues to make history.
