Sharks’ football season ends nobly

By: Natalie Decker

On Nov. 6th, the Ponte Vedra High School football team was defeated by the Creekside Knights 26-9. Junior Davis Ashcroft kicked a field goal in the first quarter, making the score 19-3. Senior running back Campbell Parker had 17 carries over 70 total rushing yards. Senior wide receiver Cameron Andrews had over 50 receiving yards and scored a touchdown in the third quarter. Andrews said “We’ve definitely been scrambling these last few games, but I’m so glad we were able to get some points on the board this week. We’re missing some core members of our team but it’s great to see some of the underclassmen get some playing time and surprise us. Most of all we’ve been able to bond more and more as a team, and we are blessed to be able to play a playoff game next week.” With Senior Jacobi Myers and Junior Jacob Weisner still recovering from injuries, sophomore Nathan Bunkosky played quarterback and had 75 total passing yards.

The Sharks made it to the first round of playoffs on Nov. 13, playing Columbia High School. Ponte Vedra High School lost 14-0, ending the Sharks’ 2020 season. Some great defensive plays were made by senior cornerback Joseph Skinner, linebacker Shane Bloss, and defensive end Brandon Hines. Hines said “The last two weeks of games this season we were faced with challenges but overcoming the pressure only strengthened us as a unit.” Senior Campbell Parker had 16 carries over 50 rushing yards in his last game of his high school football career. His final remarks are “It was a tough way to end the season, having the feeling that we could having won against both Columbia and Creekside. But I’m so proud that we as a team fought till the very end with some of us on our last legs. These have been the best four years of my life and I’m sad it’s over, but the brotherhood we’ve formed is unbreakable.”
