Sharks Baseball off to a Slow Start

By Rocco Garcia

The Ponte Vedra High School Sharks baseball team entered in this week at 1-7 and continued a very tough schedule. The Sharks played the Trinity Christian Academy Conquerors this week with a record of 7-1. The Conquerors scored first at the top of the second but the Sharks knotted it up in the bottom of the third with a sacrifice fly from senior pitcher, Matt Hoag letting the junior short stop, Jack Brady score from third base. The Conquerors added two more runs in the top of the fourth and senior first baseman, Dom Masto hit a single and bringing the junior third baseman, Cole Rambler home from third base, making the score 3-2. The junior starting pitcher for the night, Carson Evanger stated that, “We need to put more focus on the plate, we need to stop swinging at low and high pitches and stop taking pitches in the strike zone.” The Conquerors proceeded to add three more runs and the Sharks could not respond. The Sharks lost 6-2 with a record of 1-8.

“Our defense was acceptable, our offense was better all-around but still needs work.”

The next day, the Sharks traveled to play the Nease Panthers. The Sharks started the game out hot with three runs scored in the top of the first. Hoag grounded out and scored Brady, then senior outfielder, Parker Gunnell scored a triple scoring two runs. In the top of the fifth, Hoag hit a double scoring Rambler. Sophomore pitcher, Storm Lickliter said, “Our defense was acceptable, our offense was better all-around but still needs work.” Lickliter pitched six innings holding the panthers to nothing. The Sharks held off the Panthers last effort and won 4-3. The Sharks are now 2-8 and will play Eagle’s View Academy at home, hoping to catch a win streak.
