Week 4 (9/6) update
This week has been one of many successes for the Ponte Vedra High School girls volleyball
team. First off, the girls swept the Nike Tournament of Champions in Orlando this past Sept. 3
and Sept. 4, with an overall score of 7-0. This triumphant weekend did not only contribute
towards continuing this seasons winning streak, but pushed the PVHS girls volleyball team to be
ranked number one in the country, for girls high school volleyball. Previously ranked number
four, the team is ecstatic to hear the news. Senior, Kendall Mignerey comments, “It is very
rewarding to see our hard work pay off. It’s surreal, and when we went to the tournament, I
didn’t know how we would compare to the other teams, but the outcome was kind of
shocking.”
Following the victorious weekend, the girls traveled over to Middleburg High School Sept. 7,
with a final score of 3-0. In addition to the successful game against MHS, junior, Zeta
Washington was recognized as athlete of the week for PVHS athletics. With a reported 73 kills
and 18 blocks for this season, Washington has continued to display the qualities of a star
athlete, and has been a well sought-after recruit for 2023 girls volleyball, both in school and
club season. Not only this, but the winning streak for the entirety of the PVHS girls volleyball
team has shown strong signs working towards the road to another State Championship win for
this season.
Week 3 (8/31) update
Another successful game for the Ponte Vedra High School girls volleyball team this week
against Bartram Trail High School. Defeating the Bears 3-0, junior, Jessica Shattles led with a
total of 37 assists, as seniors Kendall Mignerey and Rachel Johnson continued their lead in kills,
with a combined total of 29 this game. The Sharks were fast to break Bartram’s winning streak, with
final set scores of 25-13, 25-17, and 25-18.
The girls shared their excitement on many of the game’s highlights, including a kick save by
senior libero Ava Witt, as well as a free-ball kill from the 30-foot line by Mignerey. Junior Zeta
Washington went in depth on the team’s mindset going into the game, “We knew going
into the game that it was going to be tough. Bartram always has a solid lineup, so we had to
make sure we were our best selves and play our hardest.” Washington concluded by
emphasizing the importance of having a consistent level of energy and fun, which both contribute to
reducing errors and creating a cohesive flow within the team.
The team has a tournament Sept. 3- Sept. 5 in Orlando, and continues regular season matches
Sept. 7 against Middleburg High School, and Sept. 9 against Nease High School.
